SD manufacturing survey out, features good news
More jobs and more businesses.
That’s the short version of the sneak-peek at Manufacturers’ News Inc.’s annual survey results for the state of South Dakota.
The 2009 SD Manufacturers Register lists 1,649 manufacturers and industrial suppliers in the state — that includes 116 new listings and doesn’t include 91 out-of-business companies.
Jobs are up, too — 1.1 percent up, in fact, for a total of 51,785 jobs compared to 51,208 last year.
Some other interesting numbers:
Web sites and e-mail accounts reported by manufacturers in the state climbed 15 percent, and the number of executive contacts rose 9 percent.

Jeremy, you need to analyze this in a much more critical fashion prior to running a headline which features the words “good news” if this is all that backs up that assertion.
Sparrow: I think any type of growth is good news. And while it’s certainly quite possible a deeper analysis of more data would prove otherwise, this was the data available. It’s a sneak peek of a larger report I don’t have. — J.F.

I happen to know for sure that one SD manufacturer has fallen on hold times in our current economy. They are laying people off right and left. I’ve heard tell they aren’t the only ones. I bet the next survey out doesn’t feature the word “good”.
Not quite: You’re probably right. We seem to lag behind other places in the country in several indicators. — J.F.
