Hot Springs cagers pop Pats by 19

BOX ELDER -- Hot Springs used a strong inside game to easily beat Douglas 70-51 at Whitehead Auditorium on Thursday night as both teams closed out their regular seasons and prepared to battle in the district playoffs next week at the Rushmore Plaza Civic Center.
The Bison, who led by as many as 30 points in the game, overcame a strong offensive output by Douglas guard Corey Sheppard, who tallied 29 points - seven more points than the rest of his teammates combined.
"We finally shot the ball well," said Scott Beehler, Hot Springs' head coach. "We've been doing it all year in practice and now we've done it in a game."
Beehler said he hoped his team's hot shooting would continue as the Bison are set to face Custer, the No. 3-ranked team in the state, Tuesday night in the District 15A playoffs.
Douglas seems to be going in the other direction, as its season may end Monday night when the Patriots face Newell, a team that Douglas head coach Loren Krogstad said is hitting on all cylinders.
"Newell is playing well," Krogstad said. "They were slumping earlier, but they've beaten us, Belle (Fourche) and Hill City and look like they're on a roll."
During Thursday's game though, the end couldn't come fast enough for the Patriots as they began the game without two of their five regular starters. Dustin Saffel and Chris Larsen were benched for the entire first half for undisclosed disciplinary reasons.
For half of the first quarter Sheppard almost single-handedly kept the game close, scoring 13 of the 17 Patriot points.
Hot Springs, however, had too many weapons during the game as they dominated the inside to put up 28 in the opening stanza.
"We crashed the boards," said Beehler. "That's a key for us and we did a great job limiting their second chances and getting extra shots at our end."
The first quarter ended with an 11-2 run that put the Bison up 28-17.
The run continued throughout the second quarter as Hot Springs stepped its game up a bit more and put the game out of reach early for the overmatched Pats. The Bison outscored Douglas 18-7 in the quarter to take a 46-24 lead into the half.
Bison junior center Jack Sides' play at the beginning of the second quarter was symbolic of the entire first half for the Bison as he pulled in an offensive rebound and scored on the put-back. On the ensuing Patriot possession, Sides fought hard with Douglas center Nick Bateen and eventually fed the ball back to Bateen with an aggressive block.
Although both Saffel and Larsen played in the second half, neither was a factor in the outcome of the game.
"The way Hot Spring played tonight it probably wouldn't have mattered (if Saffel and Larsen started)," said Krogstad. "We flat out got out played tonight."
The Bison played mainly reserves in the second half.
Although they've won two games in a row, Beehler said Custer will be a difficult team to beat.
"We have to play composed basketball," he said. "We have to play with intensity and make Custer run.
"We've got confidence right now and we want to play them."
Krogstad, on the other hand, may not feel the same way as he said Newell's team is more athletic, taller and shoots better than his team.
"It's going to be a tough game for us, but if we execute our game plan, anything can happen," Krogstad said.
