RAPID CITY -- Not only did the weather heat up for the second performance of the PRCA Range Days Rodeo, so did the action in the main arena at the Central States Fairgrounds, as four new leaders rose to the top in their respective events.
Co-announcers Bob Tallman and Rapid City's Rorey Lemmel, along with rodeo clown Rudy Burns and bull fighters Al Sandvold and Allen Olson did their part to keep the crowd into the action.
While the above mentioned did their best to inform and entertain it was the 88 or so professionals out in the dirt that stole the show.
New leaders include Scott Montague of Fruitdale in the bareback, Ryan Elshere in the saddle bronc, J.D. Yates and Jay Wadhams of Pueblo, Colo., in the team roping and Deb Thompson of Gordon, Neb., in the barrel racing.
South Dakota cowboys now sit atop the leaderboard in the bareback, steer wrestling, saddle bronc and the bull riding competition with one more day to go.
Camp Crook's Ivan Tiegen still holds the lead in the steer wrestling with a sparkling 3.9. He posted that time in the slack on Thursday afternoon.
Ray Brown's 8.8 second time in the calf roping made it another day as no one could break the nine-second barrier.
Dewey O'Dea of Sturgis, is still the one to topple in the bull riding. His 87 from Thursday night was still the score to beat.
Fred Boettcher scored an 84 on Bull Ford to move into third place behind O'Dea and Camp Crook's Jesse Bail.
Of all the rides and timed competitors none stood out more than Ryan Elshere's performance in the saddle bronc action.
Elshere, who claims Elm Springs as his residence, got a re-ride after his first bucking horse didn't buck. He jumped on Broken Kettle, a National Finals Rodeo saddle bronc horse, and rode it the mandatory eight seconds for a mark of 86 to take the overall lead in the event.
In the process he knocked Bail and Alan Bandy, who marked twin 84's on Thursday into a tie for second place.
A couple of Colorado cousins from Pueblo, J.D. Yates and and Jay Wadhams broke out of the chute and overmatched their calf and fellow ropers with a bristling 4.6 time. Wade and Jeff Nelson the first night leaders sit in second with a mark of 5.4.
Deb Thompson lowered the mark in the barrel racing as she powered past three barrels in the required clover leaf pattern with a time of 17.30.
Kappy Allen of Austin, Tex., clocked a 17.63, which puts her right behind the first day leader, Penney Minor who recorded a 17.61.
Both Thompson and Minor are from Gordon, Neb.
Fruitdale's Scott Montague rode a horse named Sweet Dreams to an 84 in the bareback event. Daron Lacina of Hettinger, N.D. snuck into second with an 83, sending first day co-leaders Tim Shirley and Clay Volmer into a four-way tie for the third spot.
All the cowboys and cowgirls competing in the PRCA Range Days Rodeo are vying to be on top after tonight's final performance. They'll have only one shot at getting to the top in his or her specialty.
The PRCA Range Days Rodeo will begin at 7 p.m. tonight.
