Inmates charged for incarceration

REDFIELD (AP) — Prisoners in Spink County will be billed $25 a day to help defray the cost of their incarceration.
The largely rural county does not have its own jail. Because inmates must be jailed elsewhere, the costs can stack up. In only three years, between 2000-2002, the county spent more than $261,000 on housing prisoners.
As a result, authorities started looking for ways to help manage the costs, officials said.
The county caps the total amount an inmate must pay at $100, State's Attorney Victor Fischbach said. The county does not have many major crimes, and $100 will cover costs in most cases, he said.
