RAPID CITY — The Rapid City mayor's health woes are not over.
Jim Shaw will undergo open heart surgery Monday, July 25, according to a news release from his office.
Doctors will repair three partial blockages and will replace Shaw's aortic valve. Doctors discovered the partial blockages after Shaw underwent a cardiac catheterization procedure July 6.
Doctors have determined that bypass surgery is the best way to alleviate additional partial blockages. The aortic valve replacement will correct a "relatively common congenital defect" that is not causing a significant problem now but could in the future, according to the release.
Doctors decided to postpone the surgery to allow Shaw enough time to recover from the pneumonia that hospitalized him June 30.
Shaw, who is back at work, could be hospitalized up to a week after his surgery.
