BUFFALLO -- U.S. Forest Service has put a $20 million price tag for clean up of contamination from abandoned uranium mines in Harding County.
Completing its final draft of the Riley Pass Uranium Mines engineering evaluation and cost analyses, the Forest Service has released its records for the clean up project, Laurie Walters-Clark, on scene coordinator of the Riley Pass Abandoned Uranium Mine Project, said.
Following the Comprehensive Environmental Response Compensation and Liability Act, commonly known as Superfund, Forest Service officials have worked to receive funding from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to clean up the hazardous materials contaminating 12 bluffs in the Sioux Ranger District including those in the North Cave Hills.
According to its Web site, www.epa.gov, Superfund cleanup process contains a series of steps before evaluation by the environmental agency as a Superfund site. The Forest Service have taken initial steps and would like to land on the Superfund's National Priority List.
Right now, a public comment period about the 15 contaminated abandoned mining sites began July 11 and will end on Sept. 8, Walters-Clark said.
