PIERRE (AP) - The livestock industry has vaccinated hundreds of thousands of cattle since an outbreak of anthrax in South Dakota that has killed more than 400 head, according to state veterinarian Sam Holland.
Forty-eight herds in 16 counties, mostly in central South Dakota, have been infected with anthrax.
Holland, who heads the state Animal Industry Board, said ranchers and their veterinarians have slowed the anthrax outbreak by properly disposing of carcasses and by promptly vaccinating and treating affected herds.
Ranchers whose herds haven't been infected also are vaccinating hundreds of thousands of cattle, he said.
Holland said ranchers with herds that have tested positive have responded quickly to vaccinate and treat their herds with antibiotics.
