FORT YATES, N.D. — Standing Rock Sioux Tribe will swear in its new chairman, Ron His Horse Is Thunder, on Wednesday, Oct. 12, at the tribal offices in Fort Yates, N.D., and Rosebud reservation residents will go to the polls on Thursday, Oct. 27. (See related story.)

Elected Standing Rock officials are: Ron His Horse Is Thunder, chairman; Avis Little Eagle, vice chairman; Gerildene Agard, secretary; and council representatives Joe White Mountain, Bear Soldier District; Jim Jamerson, Running Antelope District; Joe Strong Heart, Wakpala District; Frank White Bull, Kenel District; Henry Harrison, Long Soldier District; Robert Cordova, Cannon Ball District; Richard Byrd, Porcupine District; and Milton Brown Otter, Rock Creek District.

On Sept. 28, more than 2,000 registered voters cast ballots to elect the chairman, vice chairman, secretary and eight council representatives to four-year terms on the Standing Rock reservation.

It was one of the biggest turnouts on the reservation, Avis Little Eagle, publisher of the Teton Times in McLaughlin, said.

Two incumbents, Frank White Bull and Milton Brown Otter, won their seats on the council. The tribe has 17 council seats representing eight districts.

"People were going to the polls because they cared," Little Eagle said.
