ROSEBUD -- Officials from the Rosebud and Pine Ridge Indian reservations have been named to the National Strategy Group on Underground Storage Tanks, which will meet in Phoenix from Wednesday through Friday, Dec. 7-9.
Syed Huq, director of Mni Wiconi Rosebud Rural Water System/Water Resources and Environment, and Randy Bettelyoun, the underground storage-tank technician for the Oglala Sioux Tribe, will attend the meeting.
Huq said the national strategy group was formed by the Environmental Protection Agency to develop and carry out plans to clean up contamination from underground storage tanks.
The group faces an Aug. 8 deadline to conduct inventories and develop cleanup plans, Huq said. It must submit a report to Congress a year later.
Huq said the Rosebud Sioux Tribe and the EPA are now working to fix contamination problems caused by underground storage tanks in Mission.
Huq said anyone on the Rosebud reservation with information about contamination from underground storage tanks may call him at 747-2559.
