CHADRON, Neb. — The joy of the holiday season was dampened Tuesday for the about 60 employees of a call center here who reported to work only to learn that effective immediately the center was closing its doors and their jobs were being eliminated.

John Dykes, facilities manager for the ACI Telecentrics center, said he received news of the closing in a conference call at 7:30 a.m. Tuesday and met with day-shift workers at 8 a.m. and again at 5 p.m. with night-shift workers to relay the news.

“They just said they were shutting the doors,” Dykes said of his superiors. “It was pretty much of a shock.”

Most employees of the center will receive their last paycheck Friday, Dykes said.

The center had workers from Chadron and surrounding communities as far away as Gordon and Alliance, he said. About half of the center’s 60 to 65 workers were full-time. The center had a number of college and high school students in its work force but many others as well, he said.

“We had ages from 16 to 66,” Dykes said.

ACI has operated the call center in Chadron since 1997. Its primary business recently had been ‘outbound’ calling for telephone services and work for credit-card acquisitions and services.
