Christian Relief Service Charities will honor Olympic gold medalist Billy Mills at its 20th Anniversary Gala Celebration this April.
Nicholas Sparks, bestselling author of "Message in a Bottle," will join Mills, an enrolled member of the Oglala Sioux Tribe, at a gala and reception April 22 at the National Museum of the American Indian on the Mall in Washington, D.C.
Sparks will present Mills, the national spokesperson for Running Strong for American Indian Youth, with the Christian Relief Service Charities Humanitarian Award. Along with Running Strong, Christian Relief Service Charities also supports the Cheyenne Youth Project.
Both projects help meet the immediate needs of food, water and shelter for Indian people in South Dakota.
This winter, Running Strong for American Indian Youth provided matching grants of $4,000 to $5,000 for emergency heating assistance to each of Pine Ridge Indian Reservation's nine districts. Last year, the heating program provided heating assistance to 801 families and 152 families on the Pine Ridge and Cheyenne River reservations, respectively.
Tickets are $125. For information or tickets, call Shana Inofuentes at 1-703-317-9086.
