SPEARFISH - A dog that worked on the front lines of the war on drug trafficking in South Dakota has died.
Crocket, a 13-year-old yellow Labrador that worked side-by-side with South Dakota Highway Patrol Trooper Brian Swets, suffered a stroke that caused paralysis to his left side last week in Spearfish, Swets said. The veterinarian determined that there was no chance of recovery, and Crocket was euthanized.
Crocket, who retired from service in October 2003, was trained to detect illegal drugs by sniffing the exterior of a vehicle, school locker or sealed package. Crocket could walk around a suspicious vehicle and detect even trace amounts of illegal drugs.
Crocket had many law enforcement accomplishments. Over the years, he uncovered more than $1 million and hundreds of pounds of illegal drugs from trafficking suspects on Interstate 90 and communities in the northern Black Hills.
Crocket was born in New York and trained in Omaha, Neb., before joining the South Dakota Highway Patrol about 10 years ago. After working for four years with another highway patrolman, Crocket was assigned to Swets.
After his retirement, Crocket lived with Swets and his family.
