BELLE FOURCHE -- Slushy roads caused a four-vehicle accident Tuesday afternoon about four miles west of Belle Fourche, according to the South Dakota Highway Patrol.
A news release written by Trooper Michael Hansen of the Highway Patrol said that no life-threatening injuries were incurred from the accident, which happened about 1:30 p.m.
Hanson said 51-year old Thomas Geurts of Castle Rock, Colo., lost control of his semitrailer while traveling east on U.S. Highway 212 and side-swiped a westbound Mercury Marquis driven by 77-year-old Lawrence Capra of Boyes, Mont.
A 2004 Dodge Intrepid driven by 55-year-old James Cantino of Olathe, Kan., then struck the passenger side of the semitrailer and hit the fuel tank, Hansen said. Then, a 1998 Mercedes SUV driven by Kenneth Pratt, 50, struck the rear of the Intrepid. Pratt's hometown was not provided.
Capra was the only one to receive major injuries, Hansen said. However, his injuries did not appear to be life-threatening.
According to Hansen, high winds and blowing snow made road conditions hazardous.
