STURGIS - Late ’60s and early ’70s rock group James Gang, known for the hit “Funk #49,” will perform at the Buffalo Chip Campground on Thursday, Aug. 10, during this year’s Sturgis motorcycle rally.

The group is made up of former Eagles member Joe Walsh, who is also known for his solo career, on guitar, Jim Fox on drums and Tom Kriss on bass. The band has made sporadic appearances but has not toured as a group since 1971.

“‘Funk #49’ played live at the Buffalo Chip. I didn’t think that would ever happen. They quit touring years before we had our first party,” campground owner Rod Woodruff said in a news release.

The group started in 1966 in Cleveland, Ohio, according to the news release. Walsh joined in 1968, and the group released several albums before losing Walsh in 1971 and eventually breaking up in 1976.

Woodruff said he is excited to have the band playing at his venue.

“We’re so pleased to be a part of this historic reunion tour with one of the Eagles, Joe Walsh, rejoining with the James Gang, which was a pivotal band of the early ’70s. It’s just a wonderful addition to our 25th annual celebration,” he said.

The Buffalo Chip 2006 Concert Series will also feature Alice Cooper, Gretchen Wilson and Lynyrd Skynyrd, Montgomery Gentry and George Thorogood & The Destroyers, and Kid Rock with Blue Oyster Cult.
