PINE RIDGE -- The Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community of Prior Lake, Minn., awarded a $500,000 grant to the Oglala Sioux Tribe for Cangleska, a tribal domestic-violence and sexual-assault prevention organization.
According to a news release, the grant will help fund a new women's shelter to replace the one on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation. Since 1989, Cangleska has operated domestic-abuse shelters in Pine Ridge and Rapid City.
In addition to providing safe space for battered women and their children, Cangleska provides outreach advocacy services, probation services, civil-liberty services, a men's re-education program, an integrated criminal-justice system, and coordinated response and training. It also operates Sacred Circle, a national resource center offering technical assistance, consultation and training to American Indian tribes and organizations in developing strategies and remedies to end violence against Indian women, the release said.
