DEVILS TOWER, WYO. -- Dorothy FireCloud, a long-time federal employee with management experience with the U.S. Forest Service, has been named superintendent of Devils Tower National Monument in Wyoming by Mike Snyder, director of the National Park Service's Intermountain Region.

"Dorothy brings excellent credentials and experience to her new job with the National Park Service," Snyder said in a news release. "She understands the importance of balancing the interests of all Americans who use America's public lands. Maintaining that balance at Devils Tower remains an important priority for the National Park Service."

FireCloud, an enrolled member of the Rosebud Sioux Tribe, most recently completed assignments with the Forest Service as acting district ranger in Hoonah, Alaska, and acting deputy forest supervisor at Black Hills National Forest. Previously, she was team leader of the Forest Service's National Implementation Team on tribal relations and regional tribal-relations program manager for the Forest Service's Southwest Region.

FireCloud, who has a law degree from University of New Mexico, began her federal career in 1992 as a water-rights specialist with the Bureau of Indian Affairs in the Phoenix office. She has also worked for BIA as an administrative officer at the Hopi Agency at Keams Canyon, Ariz., and for the Pueblo of Zuni, where she developed the Pueblo's water-rights program.

"I am deeply honored to have been given the opportunity to lead Devils Tower," FireCloud said.

"I look forward to working collaboratively with the various stakeholders: tribes, traditional practitioners, climbers, local communities and visitors. My son, Sean, and I are eager to make this move and become established in the area," she said.

"We look forward to celebrating the Devils Tower centennial with the local community and visitors from around the world."

Devils Tower National Monument is America's first national monument. It was created by President Roosevelt on Sept. 24, 1906, under the Antiquities Act.
