PIERRE -- Some South Dakotans are getting an extra 12 days to renew their license plates.

Problems with the state's computer network on Tuesday prompted officials to extend the plate renewal period to June 16 for vehicle owners whose last names begin with the letters H, I or O.

Normally, those plates would have to be renewed by June 1.

Debra Hillmer, director of the state Motor Vehicles Division, said South Dakota law enforcement has been told about the extension. People who haven't renewed their plates and will be traveling out of state during the extension period should get a permit from their county treasurer, Hillmer said.

Pennington County Treasurer Janet Sayler said Wednesday she would urge residents not to wait until June 16 to get the license renewed. Those who wait would have to contend with people whose license plates must be renewed in June.
