CASPER, Wyo. - The National American University women's rodeo team could not hang on to win the team title, however, Jessica Painter won the breakaway roping competition on Finals night at the College National Finals Rodeo on Saturday.
Painter posted a time of 3.9 seconds in the final go of breakaway roping on Saturday night and her total on four attempts equaled 12.8 seconds, the best in the field.
"That was enough to win her the title," said NAU head coach Glen Lammers about Painter's 3.9-second final go. "She had the best average and ended up winning the title that way."
Raelyn Gardner of Eastern New Mexico University took second in the event at :13.2.
The Lady Mavericks, who entered the night with a five-point lead and had two cowgirls in the finals, ended up in second place with 375 team points. Weber State University took four cowgirls into the finals and ended up winning with 512.5 points.
"Yeah, it's the highest finish we've ever had," Lammers added. "The women's team was fourth two years ago and third last year; and reserve champions this year. That's a pretty good record."
In the finals of the tie-down roping event, NAU's Miles Garwood came up with an 8.9-second clocking to win the go. He ended up fourth in the event at :44.9.
"That's definitely a good finish," noted Lammers. "He was also fourth in the all-around."
Garwood tallied 155 points in the all-around competition.
Chadron State's Chase Francis teamed with Trenton Watts of Northwestern Junior College to take sixth in the team roping competition with a time of :47.0.

In the women's all-around, Kirby Eppert of Tarleton State University won, while Ben Londo, a cowboy at Cal Poly State University-San Luis Obispo, won the men's all-around.
"It was a really exciting final round today and I'm just really proud of the girls, and the guys too," added Lammers. "They really just used their heads and had a great week of rodeo."
