OLC graduation activities begin

KYLE - Oglala Lakota College will graduate 166 students at its 33rd commencement ceremonies on Sunday, June 25. Rep. Stephanie Herseth, D-S.D., will give the keynote address.

OLC president Thomas Shortbull said the college has played a major role in rebuilding the Lakota Nation, one student and one graduate at a time. “We are extremely proud of our graduating students; they serve as role models for our future generation,” Shortbull said.

Events for the 33rd graduation of the four-year college, which was chartered by the Oglala Sioux Tribe and accredited by the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools, will run from today through Sunday, June 25.

Ceremonies will begin with the General Education Development graduation at 5 p.m. today at OLC administrative center; the baccalaureate dinner begins at 6 p.m. Friday, June 23, at Little Wound School in Kyle; and the graduation ceremony and awarding of the degrees will be at 10 a.m. Sunday at the Piya Wiconi Three Mile Creek powwow grounds, six miles southwest of Kyle.

The OLC Graduation Wacipi & Contest will be Friday through Sunday at the Piya Wiconi Three Mile Creek powwow grounds. A 10K/5K and 2-mile walk/run will start at 6 p.m. Saturday at the powwow grounds.

The co-ed softball tournament will be today through Sunday at the Porcupine School baseball field.
