PIERRE (AP) — A 33-year-old rural Pierre man was sentenced Monday to 30 years in prison after pleading guilty to rape and sexual contact.
Leo Jackson was given the maximum sentence of 15 years each for one count of third-degree rape and one count of sexual contact with a person under 16.
Circuit Judge James Anderson ordered the sentences to be served consecutively.
Prosecutors said Jackson had sexual contact with an 11-year-old girl.
In court, Jackson apologized to the victim and her family. “I know what I did was wrong. There was no excuse,” he said.
Jackson’s lawyer said the incident happened only once and that Jackson took responsibility. The attorney, Tara Adamski, had suggested Jackson get a suspended imposition of sentence and be required to register as a sex offender.
Jackson will be eligible for parole after serving 70 percent of the sentence, Anderson said.
