AGENCY VILLAGE (AP) — Former Sisseton-Wahpeton Oyate Tribal Chairman J.C. Crawford has taken out papers to run for his old job in a six-way race in the Oct. 3 primary.
The top two vote-getters meet in the general election Nov. 7.
The tribal council removed Crawford from office in March four months ago.
Crawford said if the tribal election board certifies him to run, it will prove he has done nothing wrong. The board is expected to announce the certified candidates for the election on Aug. 25.
The council removed Crawford from office amid allegations he misappropriated almost $700,000 in seven separate incidents beginning in 2003 and continuing through 2005.
He also was accused of misusing tribal-issued credit cards.
Crawford has maintained his innocence.
“The council had it in their mind that I was a criminal,” he said. “They didn’t even look at the facts. I asked for a criminal investigation into my credit cards, but nobody wanted to do it. They knew it would clear me.”
