PINE RIDGE -- As part of the "Realizing the Dream" movement, the eldest son of legendary civil-rights leader Martin Luther King Jr. will meet with American Indian families on Pine Ridge Indian Reservation.
Indian activist, actor and author Russell Means said Monday that Martin Luther King III will meet privately with four families at Kyle and Wanblee to discuss their daily struggle with poverty. In his conversations, King wants to learn what private or public initiatives have been taken to eliminate poverty in those communities, which may be used to eliminate impoverished conditions in other parts of the nation, Means said.
Means has tentatively scheduled a town-hall meeting today in Pine Ridge as part of King's Listening and Learning Tour to impoverished towns, rural areas and communities in the United States. More details, such as the time and place of the meeting, were not available Monday.
"He's here to listen; he's been doing this all over the nation," Means said Monday.
Last month, King visited the Navajo Nation as part of the nationwide movement to combat poverty and economic injustice in America. Included in King's 20-city tour have been visits to several reservations, which now includes Pine Ridge, Means said.
Means said King is documenting the information he is gathering and will present it at an October summit in Washington, D.C., with representatives from all communities that have been visited.
"It is the kind of information in America that people should know about," Means said.
