SIOUX FALLS (AP) — Federal prosecutors say a Sioux Falls man faces nine charges, including identity theft, mail theft and wire fraud, relating to identity theft.

Phillip Krejci stands accused of stealing mail from three people’s mailboxes between September 2005 and June and using the information to apply for credit cards.

Court documents say he used the credit cards to buy a new motorcycle and a notebook computer.

Krejci applied for credit cards on the Internet using names and Social Security numbers of Sioux Falls residents and then stole the cards when they arrived in their mailboxes, prosecutors said.

The indictment does not say whether Krejci knew the people or how he could have learned their Social Security numbers.

Local and federal agencies have formed a task force to educate people about identity theft prevention and investigative techniques.

“We’re seeing it more and more often,” U.S. Attorney Marty Jackley said.
