Incumbant tribal chairman leads after election returns

EAGLE BUTTE -- Incumbent Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe Chairman Harold Frazer leads a group of 16 challengers for the tribe's top office after a primary Tuesday. The two top vote-getters in most categories will run in the November general election. In Districts 4 and 5, four candidates advance to the general election.

Following are the unofficial results of the Aug. 8 primary election. Tribal officials said its election board has yet to count affidavit ballots and canvassing will continue this week.

- Chairman: Harold C. Frazier, 307; Frank D. Thompson, 168; David Hump, 154; Bryce In The Woods, 154; Joseph Brings Plenty, 153; Kenneth (Wakpa) Provost, 152; Corbin LeBeau Sr., 140; Raymond Uses The Knife, 100; Joseph A. Lends His Horse Sr., 87; Teton Ducheneaux, 86; Robert Chasing Hawk Sr., 61; Janet F. Collins, 29; Juanita Young, 24; Jamie R. Ducheneaux I, 22; Joseph Lafferty, 16; Harley L. Zephier, 14; and Richard "Rick" Pritzkau, 11. There are 354 affidavits that remain to be counted.

- Secretary: Ev Ann White Feather, 511; Kenita Counting Taylor, 357; Bernice C. White Eagle, 337; Katherine Patti Kennedy, 303; and Tisha Moran 187. There are 354 affidavits that remain to be counted.

- Treasurer: Benita Clark, 537; Clara L. LeBeau, 310; Delena Handboy, 202; and Karen Little Wounded, 199. There are 354 affidavits that remain to be counted.

- District No. 1: Ardys Cynthia Cook, 65; Burton In The Woods Sr., 48; Robert G. Smith, 29; Cindy Red Bear-Schad, 27; Joseph S. Garter Eagleboy, 14; James John Mestes, 12; Joleen N. Straighthead, 9; and Mervin Frazier, 6. There are 34 affidavits that remain to be counted.

- District No. 3: Edward Widow, 49; Sylvester Waloke, 34; Iris Eagle Chasing, 31; Keeler Condon, 17; Anita Washburn, 16; Sullivan White Wolf Jr., 15; Beryle Marrowbone, 7; Eugene Blue Arm, 7; Clement G. Long, 5; There are 18 affidavits that remain to be counted.

- District No. 4: Kevin C. Keckler, 270; Mark J. Knight, 144; Arlee F. High Elk, 135; Merrie E. Miller, 81; James D. Picotte, 78; Scott James Laundreaux Sr., 70; Marilyn Circle Eagle, 63; Muriel Vivian High Elk, 54; Wendy B. LeBeau, 50; and Kelly Ward, 37. There are 146 affidavits that remain to be counted.

- District No. 5: Derek Bartlett, 141; Robert "Bob" Walters, 129; Melvin Garreau Sr., 118; Gib Marshall, 92; M. Jay Cook, 66; Arlene Thompson, 61; Bertha Chasing Hawk, 34; Daniel LaPlante, 29; Buddy Colombe Sr., 28; Shannon Ray Brown, 27; and Ben Brown Wolf, 21. There are 131 affidavits that remain to be counted.

- District No. 6: Michael E. Rousseau, 68; DeAnna C. LeBeau, 52; Desiree Gray, 44; Morgan Garreau, 30; and Larry Fiddler, 29.
