OLC readies for election

KYLE — Oglala Lakota College has set its petition deadline for 18 positions of its trustee and local boards on Pine Ridge Indian Reservation. Balloting will take place on Tuesday, Nov. 7.

Candidates may pick up Board of Trustee and local board petitions on Monday, Sept. 18, at OLC president’s office at Piya Wiconi administrative center near Kyle. Local board petitions also will be available at the nine district college centers. Candidates must file the petition by 5 p.m. Friday, Sept. 29, at the president’s office at Piya Wiconi.

Trustee positions are open in the reservation’s Pine Ridge, Oglala, Wounded Knee, Pass Creek and Eagle Nest districts.

There are 15 local board positions open. Those districts are: Eagle Nest (1), Oglala (2), Pass Creek (1), Pine Ridge (1), Wounded Knee (1), East Wakpamni (2), Pejuta Haka (3), LaCreek (2) and Pahin Sinte (2).

Any registered eligible tribal member meeting the district’s residency requirement may run for a position on the main Board of Trustees or the local board in that district. Each petition must have at least 25 valid signatures of district residents.

According to OLC policy, all main and local board members are subject to alcohol and substance-abuse testing. OLC election committee members are Chairman Karlene Janis, Jonnie Clifford, Cindy Iron Cloud and Diane Winters.
