American Indian journalist group to move to Oklahoma

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) - The Native American Journalists Association has decided to move next year from University of South Dakota to University of Oklahoma.

The association will be based at the Gaylord College of Journalism and Mass Communication at OU in Norman. The group will be in a new building that is undergoing expansion.

"The NAJA Board of Directors saw that as a critical resource," the association said in a written statement. "NAJA's strategic plan calls for adding staff members to expand and develop educational programs, professional development and increase fundraising, among other initiatives.

"The plan also calls for greater interaction with tribes and Native media, and Oklahoma has both in abundance."

The 23-year-old association has 657 members, nearly half of them students. OU has more than 60 American Indian students in the Gaylord College.

Since 2002, the association has been on the campus of University of South Dakota in Vermillion, S.D., and in 2003 moved into the Al Neuharth Media Center, sharing space with the Freedom Forum.
