College rodeo: Mavericks close out fall schedule on top

The National American University Mavericks just returned from their final Great Plains Regional Intercollegiate rodeo of the fall season.

The points from this past weekend's rodeo secures the NAU men's and women's teams first-place rankings in the Great Plains Region and has several NAU student athletes leading individual events.

NAU men's team has 2,840 points followed by Dickinson State with 2,160 points. On the women's side, National American has a strong lead with 1,950 points and is followed by South Dakota State University with 780.

Juniors Nick Guy and Jena Lien are leading the all-around race in the region. Both qualified for the College National Finals last year. Other region leaders after four rodeos include Nick Guy, steer wrestling; O.J. Heidler, saddle bronc riding; Jena Lien, goat tying, Krista Minow, barrel racing; and Tyler Thiel, tie-down roping.

The NDSU Bison Stampede was held in Fargo, N.D., Oct. 20-21. The women's team won the rodeo and the men's team ended the weekend in third place.
