SPEARFISH - The long battle with cancer has ended for Shane Drury. The 27-year-old Rapid City Central grad died in the early morning hours on Tuesday at his home in Ewing, Nebraska.
Shane experienced back pain while competing in his first National Finals Rodeo in Las Vegas in 2000. Later he learned that the pain was in reality Ewing's Sarcoma. After early treatment he came back to ride bulls again, but eventually became too weak. For the past few years he's been judging bull riding across the country when his health allowed.
He had been in the hospital for some time, but recently asked to go home to be with his friends and family.
Drury won the South Dakota High School bareback title his senior year at Central, but bull riding was in his blood and it eventually took him to college in Weatherford, Texas and Southwest Oklahoma State.
During his rehab work he touched a lot of lives with his spirit and good cheer, encouraging others even as he got sicker. He left a note for his brother Chad to be opened after his death. In part it said: "Let people know I am at peace, to keep smiling and to always keep God close to your hearts."
