A California woman was struck by a train Sunday while driving her Toyota 4-Runner in Black Hawk but escaped without injury.
According to a news release from the South Dakota Highway Patrol, 27-year-old Kathlene Hughes of Abilene, Calif., was driving on Foothills Drive near its intersection with S.D. Highway 79 in Black Hawk when she was struck by a northbound Dakota, Minnesota and Eastern Railroad train.
The accident happened about 5:58 p.m.
Hughes said she saw the headlight of the train but believed the lights were from a vehicle northbound on Highway 79.
The train struck Hughes in the driver’s side. She was wearing a seat belt and was not injured. Alcohol was not a factor in the collision.
Hughes was charged with careless driving.
