CHADRON, Neb. - Danny Woodhead of Chadron State became the NCAA's first 2,700-yard single-season rusher on Saturday, when he carried 35 times for 252 yards during the Eagles' 43-17 victory over West Texas A&M.
Woodhead entered the day with 2,488 yards rushing this season. That was third on the all-time NCAA Division II list. He needed 49 yards to move into second place ahead of Ian Smart of C.W. Post in New York, who rushed for 2,536 yards in 2001, and needed 166 yards to break the record of 2,653 yards set by Kavin Gailliard of American International located at Springfield, Mass., in 1999
Woodhead had 50 yards at the end of the first period to barely pull ahead of Smart. He had 133 by halftime and broke Gailliard's record on his first carry in the second half, when he raced 41 yards to set up what was the go-ahead touchdown. He scored the TD from eight yards out after catching a "desperation" pass from alternate quarterback Tyler Hidrogo, who had barely avoided being sacked on the play.
Woodhead ended the day with 2,740 yards on 328 rushes, an average of 8.4 yards a carry and 228.3 yards a game.
The Division I-A all-time, single-season rushing leader is Barry Sanders of Oklahoma State with 2,628 yards on 344 carries in 11 games in 1988.
The Division I-AA single-season leader is Arnold Mickens of Butler University, Ind., with 2,255 yards on 409 carries in 10 games in 1994.
The Division III all-time leader is Dante Brown of Marietta College in Ohio with 2,385 yards on 314 carries in 10 games in 1996.
