RAPID CITY -- Three area businesses have offered to match funds raised by the community to care for the 159 dogs brought to Humane Society of the Black Hills in November after being taken from a home near Provo.

US Bank, J. Scull Construction and Barker and Little Property Management will match as much as $25,000 in donations.

Phil Olson, executive director of the Humane Society, said the total cost of caring for the dogs could add up to $50,000.

Costs will include spaying and neutering, flea treatments, vaccinations, worming and transportation to foster homes.

Olson said dogs are being placed in foster homes throughout the Midwest while they learn social skills to live in a family setting. While in foster care, the Humane Society provides for their medical care.

He said it may be some time before all of the dogs are conditioned for permanent adoption.

A special account called Banking for the Dogs has been established at US Bank to accept donations. All donations are tax-deductible. Donations can be made by calling US Bank at 348-2293.

Donations of money and name-brand dry dog food are accepted at the Humane Society at 1820 E. St. Patrick St. or at any local US Bank branch.

Humane Society of the Black Hills is a nonprofit corporation and takes in about 6,000 homeless and stray animals each year.
