MITCHELL (AP) -- A report this week that system storage in the Missouri River reservoir system is at a record low is not a good sign for boating access on Lake Oahe next year.

Bob Schneider, assistant parks director in the state Department of Game, Fish & Parks, said the Legislature will be asked for money to extend boat ramps.

It's been a nearly constant battle since 2003 to extend boat ramps to the receding lake level.

"We're all keeping our fingers crossed and hoping this will be the winter that we get a lot of snow in the mountains and this will turn around," Schneider said. "I guess we plan for the worst and hope for the best."

Lake Oahe is about 26 feet below normal. There are 32 boat ramps on the reservoir, but only about a dozen are functioning.

Schneider said GF&P expects to keep those dozen ramps operating next year, but the effort could take money away from other projects.
