SIOUX FALLS (AP) — The family of U.S. Sen. Tim Johnson prepared for his 60th birthday on Thursday as the state’s senior senator remained sedated in a Washington, D.C., hospital.

Johnson has been recovering at George Washington University Hospital after undergoing emergency brain surgery Dec. 13. He was diagnosed with arteriovenous malformation, which causes arteries and veins to grow abnormally large and sometimes burst.

His wife, Barbara, remains encouraged, Johnson spokesman Noah Pinegar said.

“Like everybody, we are waiting on further word and hope things remain on course,” he said.

Pinegar did not know how long Johnson would remain under sedation. Rest has been a priority for his recovery.

Johnson’s sons, Brendan in Sioux Falls and Brooks in Boston, are expected to fly to Washington for their father’s birthday, and his daughter Kelsey, who lives in Washington, will visit, Pinegar said.

  • you called someone an idiot, a racist, a dope, a moron, etc. Please, no name-calling or profanity (or veiled profanity -- #$%^&*).
  • you rambled, failed to stay on topic or exhibited troll-like behavior intended to hijack the discussion at hand.
  • YOU SHOUTED YOUR COMMENT IN ALL CAPS. This is hard to read and annoys readers.
  • you named a business or identified a business in a way good or bad. Contact the business directly with your customer service concerns or your praise – they’ll likely appreciate your feedback.
  • you believe the newspaper's coverage is unfair. It would be better to write Jerry Steinley at jerry.steinley@rapidcityjournal.com or call him at 394-8427. This is a forum for community discussion, not for media criticism. We'd rather address your concerns directly.

  • your comment is in really poor taste.
