Some of the 29 B-1B bombers assigned to Ellsworth Air Force Base were to depart this morning for various locations in Southwest Asia in support of Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan.

The undisclosed number of airmen and planes from the 28th Bomb Wing are deploying in support of the 379th Air Expeditionary Wing mission.

Air crews from the 34th Bomb Squadron are replacing the 37th Bomb Squadron. The B-1B Lancer bombers can deliver massive quantities of precision and nonprecision weapons over a long range, according to a news release.

Other Ellsworth airmen, in a nonaviation specific role, are also scheduled to deploy Sunday, Jan. 28, in support of military operations in various locations worldwide. The package deploying to support the 379th Air Expeditionary Wing includes aircraft, aircrew, support personnel, maintenance, logistics readiness and expeditionary combat-support airmen.
