If you were wondering about injured South Dakota bull rider Josh Carter of Sturgis:
They transferred Josh to Craig Hospital in Englewood, Colo., in early January. He has been doing very well. Before he left Sioux Falls, they had him up on his feet and walking a little with someone on each side.
Craig Hospital wants to run a lot of tests, x-rays, & CAT scans before they start more therapy. Josh wants to get going, but they are taking their time to make sure he is healed enough to handle the more aggressive therapy.
His new address is: Craig Hospital, 3425 South Clarkson St., Room 302, Englewood, CO, 80113.
You can still keep track of Carter's progress by going to www.caringbridge.org, click on "visit" and type in "joshcarter" in the site name.
n Nice note from a reader in the south this week:
"Jim, I was born in Belle Fourche and grew up on the JH Ranch at Hulett. I now manage a ranch in Missouri an hour south of Kansas City.
Enjoy your column. My folks (Don Steiger) bought a ranch at Bentonville, Ark., in 1970 - should have bought WalMart stock. They have retired there and they save the Hulett and Sundance papers - where I use to read your column. I have been reading it on the web page for some time now. Can't seem to find the "On the Road" link on the page today.
Mary Garman, retired lawyer from Sundance is my Dad's sister. Her sons and daughter still ranch on Miller Creek. Carl Steiger"
n Carl and any others who miss this column on the web; I now have an extremely talented office manager who actually understands the internet and web pages and all that stuff ... Melissa created a new spot for On the Road Again on the web ... check on the very front page of our web site www.livewithjt.com and there it is:
n More from Carl that you'll find interesting: "Jim, I enjoyed your stories on Tipperary. The JH Ranch at Hulett was owned by pioneer South Dakota cattleman, Jack Hale of Tilford. The following is from a story in "The Rapid City Journal" May 17, 1966 after he was named as an honoree in the Hall of Fame of Great Westerners of the National Cowboy Hall of Fame and Western Heritage Center in Oklahoma City ... 'In 1893, the editor of a Chadron Neb., newspaper suggested an endurance race from Chadron to Chicago, the winner to have a purse or $1,000 plus $500 added by Buffalo Bill Cody. Jack thought this was a good bet, so he picked two horses, the number allowed each rider, who rode one and led the other. He selected Sandy, from the JH Ranch in Wyoming, and a horse called Poison from his Tilford Ranch. They were ridden by Jack Berry, who won the race of 1,050 miles in 13 days and 16 hours, an average of 17 miles per day. All the money and trophies Jack received for winning the race he gave to his rider as well as the horse Sandy.'
My figures show around 80 miles per day. Carl Steiger"
n Deb Black writes: "I am not sure if you had heard about my son's good news from the NFR Bucking horse sale.
Ryon Rypkema had a mare consigned in the bareback portion ... when it was all said and done she ended up the high-selling bareback horse. I kidded him about a performance horse trainer having the high selling bareback horse - he told me that if he couldn't get them rode they belonged at the NFR!"
So if you see Ryon during the BHSS check out the new buckle.
See ya down the road!
