School of Mines to celebrate 30th Engineers Week

RAPID CITY — South Dakota School of Mines & Technology will celebrate the contributions engineers make to society during the 30th Engineers Week that runs through Saturday, Feb. 24, on campus.

The community is invited to participate in a variety of activities, including:

n A forum on the history and building of the Transcontinental Railroad system, 11:30 a.m., Tuesday, Feb. 20, at Surbeck Center Ballroom, by M.R. Hansen, professor of civil engineering.

n Rube Goldberg Machine Contest, 3 p.m., Tuesday, Feb. 20, Surbeck Center Ballroom. The object of the contest is to build a machine to accomplish the assigned duty — to take a whole orange, juice it and pour the juice from a pitcher into a cup. For more information or to register, call 394-2256.

n Recognition of Outstanding Recent Graduates and Initiation into the Order of the Engineer, 11 a.m., Thursday, Feb. 22, Surbeck Center Ballroom. Selected alumni who graduated 10 years ago will be honored for their outstanding professional and civic achievements since their graduation. Initiates into the Order of the Engineer will be presented with rings and certificates of membership.

n “Breaking the Mold: Women Engineers and Scientists,” keynote speaker Jill Tietjen, 11 a.m., Thursday,

Feb. 22, at Surbeck Center Ballroom. Come hear about these invisible, but not forgotten, women.

n “Networking: May I Help You?,” keynote speaker Jill Tietjen, 7 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 22, at Surbeck Center Ballroom. Tietjen’s first rule of networking — help the other person first — underlies this topic about one of life’s secrets.

n “Hot Chemistry, Cool Show,” 9 a.m., 10 a.m. and 11 a.m., Friday, Feb. 23, at Surbeck Center Ballroom. Presentations for elementary and middle school students by SDSM&T students and faculty demonstrate why chemistry is cool with the “vegetable light,” “elephant’s toothpaste” and other experiments. n See engineering and science at work, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Friday, Feb. 23. Various departments will have displays, experiments and interactive games to entertain and show how things work using everyday items such as dirt, water and steam. Call 394-2256 to register.

n Grubby Contests, 1:30 p.m. n 3 p.m., Friday, Feb. 23, Miner’s Shack, Surbeck Center. Students will participate in games such as the egg drop, marble grope, bubble blowing, front end loader, forces in equilibrium and silly putty bounce. Call 394-2256 to register.

n Engineers Week Banquet, 6:30 p.m., Friday, Feb. 23, Minerva’s, Rapid City. A social time and dinner will precede the Bill Craig Scholarship Presentation, Engineer of the Year Award and the Young Engineer of the Year Award. Dr. Duane Abata, dean of the school’s College of Engineering, is the keynote speaker. Call 390-9606 to register.

n Mathcounts, 1 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 24, Classroom Building, room 204. Contest for seventh- and eighth-grade students. Call 342-9470 to register.
