SPEARFISH - Black Hills State picked up a pair of Dakota Athletic Conference softball wins over Mayville State on Saturday at the BHSU softball complex.

Solid starting pitching and some clutch hitting proved to be the keys in the two wins as BHSU prevailed 4-2 in the opener and then the hosts needed eight innings to pull out a 4-3 win over the Comets in the nightcap.

Jessica Clark dominated on the mound and at the plate for Black Hills in the first game.

The Yellow Jackets got on the scoreboard first with a single run in the home half of the first inning.

The Comets responded with a two-run second inning to take a 2-1 lead. Black Hills tied it in the third and then went ahead for good with a two-run fifth inning.

Clark collected two doubles and three RBI to lead the BHSU offense. She pitched a complete game as well, allowing only four hits while fanning five to gain the win.

Amy Viidger and Devon Strain each had a pair of hits as the Jackets knocked out 10 in the win.

In the second game of the day, Viidger went the distance for Black Hills to pick up the win.

She fanned six while allowing seven hits and a walk in eight innings of work.

Third baseman Brittany Montgomery had a huge game at the plate for the Stingers with a single, double and a homerun, while knocking in all four Yellow Jacket runs.

Viidger led off with a double in the home half of the first inning. Following a walk, Montgomery's three-run blast gave the hosts a quick 3-0 lead.

Mayville chipped away with single runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings to tie the game before Montgomery stroked the game-winning hit in the bottom of the eighth.

Clark added a pair of hits for Black Hills.

The two wins were the first DAC games played by Black Hills State in softball as the

University added the program this past fall.

Softball was played by the Yellow Jackets from 1976 to 1981 before the program was cut in 1981.

They will play a total of 12 DAC games before the conference tourney begins on May 4-5.

The Yellow Jackets have now won four in a row after beating Presentation College 12-5 and 7-0 on Friday ending a six-game road losing streak.

Black Hills State (6-10) will travel to Scottsbluff, Neb. on Monday to play a double header against Western Community College.
