Founded: 1876 as a mining camp named Washington. In 1877, Washington and an adjoining town site named Golden combined under the name Lead City. In 1890, when the town incorporated, it became simply Lead.
Economic history: In 1876, brothers Fred and Moses Manuel and two partners discovered the Homestake gold claim. A year later, George Hearst bought out the Manuels and their partners for $105,000 and went on to establish the Homestake Mining Co. of California. The Lead mine eventually reached 8,000 feet underground. In 2001, gold prices and production costs forced Homestake’s parent company to close the venerable mine.
1910 population: 8,392, making it the second largest city in South Dakota.
1990 population: 3,632.
2005 population: 2,891.
