YANKTON — A South Dakota beekeeper testified Thursday about honeybee colony collapse disorder, which has destroyed hundreds of commercial honeybee colonies across the nation.
Richard Adee of Bruce appeared before a House Agriculture subcommittee in Washington and said there are no clues about the disease, which emerged just last year
“We just don’t really know what’s causing it,” he said.
The malady threatens not only the honey industry but many crops because of the bees’ role in pollination, Adee said.
“So many people have started to realize that ... these bees are pollinating $20 billion worth of food,” he said.
Adee said the problem could be caused by a new virus or a reaction to pesticides. He told the panel members that money is needed to do research.
