RAPID CITY - Slick roads and a little bit of snow couldn't keep a crop of world-class cowboys from the fourth annual Marvin Garrett Roughstock Series at the Pennington County Events Center on Thursday night.

Forty-eight contestants plied their wares for a crowd that was certainly less than was expected because of the weather. A crowd of less than 1,000 watched as world champions such as J.J. Elshere and Kelly Timberman combined with cowboys from all over the Midwest for the event, the first of four rounds that will conclude on May 20.

"It's really a bonus coming up here," Timberman, the 2004 world champion, said of the event. "These guys like Marvin Garrett and Ken Lensegrav are some of the greats. If we're not doing something right, you can be sure that they'll let us know. This is a bonus for my career and it's a great rodeo."

Timberman finished second to Ty English in bareback with a ride of 81. English came out and gave the crowd something to cheer early as he rode Stoneville Skunk to an 82 in the opening round of the bareback competition. His score would hold as the best of the night in any event until Aron Brewer rode Rip Cord to a score of 85 in the bull riding. Chris Novak scored an 84 to get second.

Brewer got a chance at Lipstick Blues in the Bank West bounty ride, where the round-winner gets a chance to stay on for eight seconds and collect an extra $500. Brewer didn't fare any better than Sturgis' Justin Brown, who had the misfortune of drawing Lipstick Blues in the first round, and registered a no score.

Saddle bronc winner J.J. Elshere of Quinn scored an 80 on Moses, and then took on A Day's Work in the bounty round. The 13-year-old bronc had only been ridden two times in its entire career, but Elshere was up to the task, showing why he is one of the best in the business and making the ride look easy.

"He was real busy," Elshere said after his second round ride on Moses. "But it turned out all right. Things are feeling great right now and I'm having fun."

The second round of bareback had some good scores as well, but no one could quite catch English. Heath Ford and Weston Garrett both scored 80s on their rides to join English and Timberman as the only contestants to break that mark in the event.

Eagle Butte's Blue Annis took third in bull riding with a 78 on Sponge Bob and Sturgis' Dewey O'Dea is in fourth after a 75 on Featherlite, who was anything but.

"He was sure strong," O'Dea said after recording one of only four scores out of 16 bull riding contestants.

The next round of the series will be Friday, April 20 at the Events Center beginning at 7:30 p.m.
