RAPID CITY — Though Saturday is officially Rapid City’s 37th annual citywide cleanup day, the event has evolved into a week long spring cleaning effort.

On Saturday, April 28, individuals and organizations will spread out throughout the community to pick up trash and debris and haul junk to the landfill for free disposal.

Businesses are encouraged to clean up sidewalks, entrances, parking lots and alleys. It’s also an opportunity for domestic packrats to reduce home clutter.

But those who can’t wait until Saturday to get out the brooms and trash bags can haul items to the landfill using private vehicles for free disposal from 7 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. all week. No household hazardous waste will be allowed, and all loads should be secured. There will be no curbside pickup.

On Saturday and Sunday, roll-off trash bins will be available from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at East Watertown and Waterloo Streets; 621 East North St. parking lot; the Food Bank on North Maple Ave.; 625 Crazy Horse St. and 625 Sitting Bull St. No tires, appliances, automotive products, paint or yard waste will be accepted at these sites.

The city is looking for individuals and groups to clean up public areas. To volunteer or sign up a group, contact the mayor’s office today at 394-4110.

Other cleanup disposals, sales and activities on Saturday include:

n Tire disposal. Cost to dispose of tires 16 inches or smaller is $2.39 each; $7.62 for each tire on rim or larger than 16 inches; $185 a ton for tractor or other large tires. All tire disposals must stop at the scale.

n No appliances will be accepted at the landfill.

n Trash to Treasure Exchange will be Saturday, April 28, at the landfill. The public is invited to bring usable items to a special area at the landfill, which will be available for free.

n Yard-waste compost sale is from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. through Saturday at the Regional Recovery and Landfill Facility. Cost is $20 for a large pickup load or $10 for a small pickup load.

n White goods: No appliances will be accepted at the landfill. All non-Freon appliances can be disposed of at Pacific Steel & Cycling from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. through Friday, April 27, for $5 per item. The company will accept and certify Freon-bearing appliances for $42.40 each. Certificates must accompany appliances to Pacific Steel for disposal through May 5. The business will be open from 7 a.m. to noon Saturday for white goods only. Karl’s TV & Appliance or K&D Appliance will accept Freon appliances including refrigerators, freezers and dehumidifiers for $47.70 each.
