College rodeo: Four from NAU first at Maverick Stampede

RAPID CITY - National American University's Maverick Stampede rodeo wrapped up Sunday at the Hart Ranch Arena. The Mavericks had four individual champions.

Dickinson State swept the team titles. For the men, the Blue Hawks tallied 615 team points, followed by NAU in second with 465. South Dakota State tied for fourth with 190.

In the women's division, Dickinson State tied for first with IACCC with 450 team points. NAU was third at 400 and SDSU took fourth with 100 points.

Individually, National American University had some solid performances both days.

Adam Mueller won the tie-down roping event in a time of 18.5 seconds. Jesse Cotton took first in saddle bronc, posting a total score of 129.

Jessica Painter came up big with a win in goat tying. She had a combined time of 14 seconds. Jena Lein tied for first in barrel racing with a total time of 28.53 seconds.

Nick Guy was runner-up in steer wrestling. The Mavericks got third-place finishes from Jesse Welbig (tie-down roping), E.J. Karp (bareback) and Lacey Curr (goat tying).

Joe Schmidt of Dickinson won the men's all-around award. IACCC's Jennilee Thompson took the honor on the women's side.

The NIRA Great Plains Region wraps up regular-season action on Friday and Saturday in Dickinson, N.D., at the Blue Hawk Stampede.

NAU's women are ranked No. 1 and the men are No. 2 in the region. Right now, the Mavericks have three automatic qualifiers for the College National Finals Rodeo.
