Promote South Dakota outside Black Hills, too

There’s a long way to go, but Gov. Mike Rounds’ plan to increase tourism spending seems to be working.
Tourism folks are trying to accomplish this with promotion efforts targeted at three tiers of visitors:
--Those in markets who need to know more about South Dakota.
--Those who need a specific reason to come back.
--Those who have been here often and need to know about something different to make yet one more trip.
That targeted effort was one of the original parts of the governor’s 2010 Initiative.
There’s still much to do, though, especially in promoting sites and events outside of the Black Hills.
We all know that pheasant hunting and the Black Hills — Sturgis rally, Mount Rushmore, Crazy Horse Memorial — are our premier attractions.
But South Dakota has more to offer, much of it untapped — from festivals and special events to sports to Native American history and pageantry to the Missouri River, even agri-tourism.
Let’s not forget we’ve only tapped into a tiny portion of what South Dakota has. There’s much more.
