Civic center time-crunch eased

RAPID CITY--Alarms raised over the prospect of a year-long delay of the RushmorePlazaCivicCenter addition project eased somewhat Wednesday after the project designer indicated there isn’t as much of a time crunch as previously thought.

City officials had been told that the project could be delayed if a $250,000 change order for some structural modifications was not approved by the end of the day Wednesday.

But during a special city council meeting called to discuss the situation, Fred Thurston of enVision Design, the project’s design firm, said after additional communication with the contractor, the need for urgency has been greatly reduced and the probable cost for needed changes will be much less.

There still needs to be some changes made to the connections that will secure the steel beams in the facility, but enVision’s new estimate is a cost of $50,000 to $75,000. EnVision said they should have a change order with a specific amount ready within a couple of weeks.

"The Civic Center does not cost the tax payers of Rapid City even one cent." Rapid City Mayor Jim Shaw said Wednesday morning as city attorney Jason Green and Rushmore Plaza Civic Center general manager Brian Maliske looked on. Shaw addressed the media about the state of the Civic Center's new addition after it came under scrutiny again Wednesday because of possible further delays in its actual construction due to the need of $250,000 in additional funding for changes in the super structure of the new building.
