Groups sponsor Memorial Day events

A number of events and services will be held in the Black Hills on Monday in observation of Memorial Day.
They include:
Rapid City — The Korean War Veterans Association Post 160 will be sponsoring a Memorial Day Program Monday at Memorial Park in Rapid City. The event begins at 8 a.m. and is expected to last until about 9 a.m. The opening invocation will be given by Robert Two Bulls, Korean War veterans chaplain.
The service will also include an address by Col. Renita D. Alexander, commander of the 28th Mission Support Group at Ellsworth Air Force base. The service will also include a rifle salute and laying of wreaths by various military groups. Various organizations, such as American Legion Post 22, American Legion Post 320, VFW Post 1273 and others will be present at the service.
Sturgis — Two different services are being held at Black Hills National Cemetery on Monday. The first service, an American Indian Memorial Day ceremony, starts at 9 a.m.
The service will feature keynote speakers Ted Twiss, a tribal veterans service officer, and Tom Short Bull, president of Oglala Lakota College. The service is expected to last until about 10 a.m.
The American Legion Department of South Dakota is hosting a second service starting at 11 a.m. Maj. Gen. Michael Gorman, adjutant general of the South Dakota National Guard, will be the keynote speaker at that service.
Between the services, at about 10:30, the 7th Cavalry Band from Rapid City will perform.
Black Hills National Cemetery is off Interstate 90 at exit 34 near Sturgis. Visitors are encouraged to be prepared for the weather.
Throughout the weekend, volunteers from Ellsworth AFB will be available to help people locate gravesites.
Piedmont — American Legion Post 311 in Piedmont is hosting a Memorial Day service at the Piedmont Cemetery at 9 a.m. Monday to honor veterans buried at the cemetery.
Our Lady of the Black Hills Catholic Church in Piedmont will host a Mass that begins at 8 a.m.
