Former Oglala Sioux Tribe treasurer David Rabbit Sr., 41, pleaded guilty Friday to a federal charge of theft from a tribal organization.
Friday’s hearing before U.S. Magistrate Judge Veronica Duffy was originally set to be a bond hearing where U.S. Attorney Mara Kohn planned to ask that Rabbit’s bond be revoked based on his May 23 arrest for spousal abuse, assault, eluding police and other tribal charges.
Instead, Rabbit entered a guilty plea to the federal theft charge and was turned over to the tribe where the other charges are pending.
Rabbit faces up to five years in prison on the theft charge when he is sentenced Aug. 27.
Former tribal vice president Eileen Janis and Kim Colhoff are also charged with theft from a tribal organization. They are accused of stealing from the Oglala Sioux Tribe with Rabbit in 2003 and 2004.
