Area Scene: Husband-wife tourney starts today

RAPID CITY — Defending champions Ryan and Julie Jansa of Sioux Falls head a field of 107 teams entered in this weekends SDGA Husband-Wife Championship at Madison Country Club in Madison.

Play begins today at 7:30 a.m. with the couples using an alternate-shot format. The 36-hole championship concludes Sunday afternoon.

The Jansa’s won the 2006 championship with a score of 1-under-par 143 at Hillcrest Golf and Country Club in Yankton. Their winning score was 18 strokes better than runners-up Ryan and Anne Tjeerdsma of Brandon. It also marked the first time in the 32-year history of the championship that the winning score was under-par. The Tjeerdsma’s are entered this year, along with 2005 champions Greg and Judy Kendall of Sioux Falls.

 Other past champions in the field include: Jim and Sharon Sorensen of Beresford, John and Anne Borgmann of Sioux falls, Scott and Jackie Witlock of Aberdeen, Bert and Cindy Olson of Sioux Falls and Nick and Jody Discoll of Hartford.


Several spots remain in basketball camps

RAPID CITY — Spots remain in the Black Hills Premier Prospect Camps at St. Thomas More High School this summer.

The boys’ camps will be June 26-28 for students from third to 12th grades. Grades 3-5 will play from 9:30 a.m. to 11 a.m., grades 6-8 from 11 a.m. to

1 p.m. and high schoolers will play from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m.

Six spots remain in the high school camp, four spots remain in the grades 6-8 camp and eight remain in the grades 3-6 camp.

The girls’ camps will be July 16-18. Girls in grades 3-6 will play from 9:30-11:30 a.m. and grades 7-12 from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

There will be a boys and girls camp August 6-8 for boys and girls in kindergarten to third grade at St. Elizabeth Seton School.

All campers will receive a free t-shirt and instruction from Shane Warwick, a former high school and college coach, and members of the St. Thomas More coaching staff — which has led their boys team to the past two state Class A championships.

Mines plans several July basketball camps

RAPID CITY — South Dakota Mines will have a boys and girls fundamental basketball camp July 9-12 and 16-19.

The camp will be for boys and girls going into grades 4-12 next fall. There will be six hour-long sessions. Each session is limited to 10 athletes.
