RAPID CITY -- Western Dakota Technical Institute is accepting applications for a new program that will prepare students for careers in environmental science.
The field engineering technician program, which begins this fall, is a two-year program offering an associate of applied science degree.
"The jobs are out there for skilled, well-prepared professionals in this field," Rick Gray, vice president of WDTI, said.
Field engineering technicians work in private industry and for state and federal agencies, Gray said. Their services are used by public and private agencies
The program prepares graduates for work in a broad range of jobs including sampling, remote sensing and material testing.
Students will take classes in mapping, global-positioning systems and geographic information systems. Courses in soil testing, water-quality management, concrete and asphalt will provide students with hands-on experience in materials testing.
In addition, the program includes courses in communications, human relations, computers and math.
