MOUNT RUSHMORE NATIONAL MEMORIAL — Vermeer Manufacturing Co. recently donated one of its brush chippers, a machine valued at $25,000 to $30,000 to Mount Rushmore National Memorial.
The donation was arranged through the Mount Rushmore National Memorial Society for the National Park Service’s use in the protection and management of the memorial’s natural resources, according to a news release.
Vermeer is a family-owned and family-managed company in Pella, Iowa. The company makes farm equipment, construction equipment, trenching equipment and other heavy machinery.
The Park Service — through prescribed burns, clearing of undergrowth and other management practices — works to protect its natural resources.
NPS officials said the Vermeer brush chipper — a machine that grinds tree branches and other debris — will allow the agency to more effectively clean up the vulnerable forest within the Mount Rushmore National Memorial boundaries. And the byproduct will provide mulch for the green public areas, returning what would be refuse and dangerous fuel for wildland fire situations back to the ecosystem, officials said.
