RAPID CITY -- Angela Sharpe, an accountant for 30 years, wanted to do something else with her life. She recently opened a new take-out food shop that features authentic American Indian foods.

The shop, called Little Jewels, is in the Laundry World Plaza at 1315 N. Haines Ave. The name, she said, derives from the idea that children are precious.

"Children are little jewels," she said. "We want to provide wholesome mentoring and positive attitudes for the children ... (and) we need to get back to eating healthful foods based on Native American diets."

Little Jewels' fare includes salmon dishes from the Pacific Northwest, bison pot roast, crab cakes from Alaskan crab, fried ribs with wojapi, sweet potato French fries, Indian blue corn breads and venison stews. It will also sell dishes such as Indian tacos and fry bread.

For now, she said, Little Jewels is strictly a carryout eatery. But she later hopes to expand the scope and launch some mentoring events with American Indian models, musicians, artists and other role models meeting with young people.

Sharpe moved to Rapid City from Seattle. She now divides her time between Rapid City and Denver, where she does accounting work.

She has a number of Lakota friends, and she wants to provide local jobs. Eventually, she hopes to open Little Jewels eateries on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation and other reservations.

Summer hours are 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday to Saturday, and noon to 6 p.m. on Sunday. For more information, call 341-2343.
